Women who participate in our Healthy Beginnings prenatal classes learn what they need to know to be well prepared for their birthing experience. The classes cover the stages of pregnancy and address the physical and emotional changes an expectant mother should anticipate. We offer support to help you eat well and remain active and energetic, and to have a safe and healthy pregnancy. Our N ewborn Care and Breastfeeding classes help you to feel confident about caring for your new arrival. Partners or support persons are welcome at all prenatal classes except for Prenatal Yoga. Early Pregnancy
Give your baby a healthy start. In this class, we’ll help you prepare for the physical and emotional changes you can expect in the coming months. We’ll tell you about our prenatal care program and give you information about other classes and resources available to you during your pregnancy. We’ll also cover the substances and foods that may be harmful, common discomforts and remedies, prenatal screening tests, and fetal development. We’ll offer tips for eating well, staying active, and keeping you and your baby healthy. The appointment will be made in the Ob/Gyn Department once you start prenatal care. We encourage you to take this class in the first trimester. Open to Kaiser Permanente members only. Available in Spanish.

Mid-pregnancy
During the middle stage of pregnancy, you’ll experience more changes to your body. In this class, we’ll help you understand these changes. You can keep your energy level high by eating well and exercising. We’re here to support you and discuss ways you can remedy common discomforts of pregnancy. We encourage you to take this class when you are 18 to 22 weeks pregnant. Open to Kaiser Permanente members only. Available in Spanish.

Late Pregnancy
The time for your baby’s arrival is drawing near. We’ll help you and your partner get ready for the labor and delivery experience. That means being able to recognize the early signs of labor and to know when to call your doctor. We’ll discuss what you can expect in the hospital, your options for pain relief during labor and delivery, and how to care for yourself after the baby is born. We encourage you to take this class when you are 28 to 34 weeks pregnant. This class does not take the place of Preparing for Childbirth. Open to Kaiser Permanente members only. Available in Spanish.

Newborn Care
Wouldn’t it be nice if babies came with instruction manuals? This class just might be the next best thing. In this session, we’ll help you learn the information andskills you need to feel confident about caring for your newborn. We’ll cover topics such as feeding, bathing, diapering, and when to call your physician. We encourage you to take this class at 32 to 36 weeks. Open to Kaiser Permanente members only. Available in Spanish.

Preparing for Childbirth
Few events are more exciting than the birth of your baby. Learn the skills and strategies that can help make your childbirth experience a positive one. I n this six-session program, we’ll teach you breathing and relaxation techniques to use during labor and delivery. We’ll discuss pain management options, the role of your coach, hospital procedures, and what to expect before, during, and after delivery. We encourage you to take this class during the last three months of pregnancy. Open to the community.

Preparing for Childbirth Refresher Class
This one-day workshop is for women who have delivered before. Bring a bag lunch. Open to the community

Pain Medications and Cesarean Delivery
This 2-hour class covers the medications available for labor pain management in the Labor and Delivery Unit in Hayward. I t also provides information to prepare families for cesarean delivery. Taught by a certified nurse midwife or nurse practitioner, and an anesthesia practitioner. Register between 20 and 24 weeks and attend at 28 and 32 weeks. Open to the community.

Prenatal Yoga
Enjoy a healthy pregnancy and bond with your baby! In the nurturing environment of this class, prepare your body and mind for birth and beyond by learning yoga postures, breathing techniques, meditation, and body awareness. This class is designed for women from 12 weeks of pregnancy to full term. Bring a yoga mat. Open to the community.

Breastfeeding Basics
Your baby’s health begins with good nutrition, and studies show that breastfeeding improves health for mothers and their children. In this class, you’ll learn why it is important to breastfeed. We’ll also show you how to hold your baby while nursing and suggest ways you can prevent common breastfeeding discomforts and challenges. Breastfeeding and the Working Mom
Need to return to work or school following the birth of your baby? Learn from one of our lactation consultants how to maintain your milk supply, and how to express and store your milk for when you need to spend time apart from your baby. La Leche League
Join other nursing mothers for our monthly discussion meetings. We talk about why breastfeeding is good for moms and babies, about birth and your baby’s first weeks, and about the art of breastfeeding, and overcoming common breastfeeding challenges. Pediatric Clinic Tour

New Mom's Support Group
Find a wealth of support and information on adjusting to motherhood in this free support group. This group is facilitated by a licensed therapist from the Department of Psychiatry. W e will talk about these topics: excitement and fears of motherhood; baby blues or depression; caring for your baby and yourself; and returning to work and choosing a childcare provider. Healthy babies are welcome. Open to Kaiser Permanente members only.
