Couples Communication Series

Learning how to communicate effectively is an ongoing process and one that requires skill even in the best of relationships. Problems in relationships are not the issue—but what is important is how we deal with them. Learn more effective ways to bring up difficult topics, reduce defensiveness and understand each other’s perspective. You’ll learn problem solving techniques and ways to increase pleasure and positive interactions. This series is for couples in committed relationships.

Forgiveness For Health

Based on the successful Forgive for Good series developed by Dr. Fred Luskin of the Stanford University Medical Center, this course will help you begin to release the old grievances, resentments, and unwanted hurts that may be damaging your health. Skills will be introduced to help you explore, accept, and release, and then move toward healing. This class is educational in nature and is not appropriate for unaddressed therapeutic issues. Managing Anger Series

Are you having trouble managing anger? Is your anger coming out in ways that are causing problems at home, with friends, or at work? There are healthy ways to deal with anger. Join this series and learn to identify what triggers your anger, develop communication skills, and practice new ways to respond before your emotions overcome you. Note: This series does not satisfy the court-ordered treatment required for domestic violence. Open to the community.

Stress, Anxiety, and Depression Overview,A Pathway to Emotional Health

Please join us to explore mild to moderate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. This introductory class will provide you with a basic understanding of causes, treatment options, self-care techniques, resources, and next steps. You will also learn about follow up care options to help manage your symptoms. Open to the community. Available in Spanish.

Stress Management: A Mind-Body Medicine Approach

Medical science has made amazing discoveries about how emotions, thoughts, and behaviors can impact physical symptoms and affect our health. Understanding this “mind-body connection” can be the first step to managing your daily stress and feeling better mentally and physically. In this series you’ll learn to recognize the sources of stress in your life and how to manage stress-related symptoms and illnesses. Understanding Anxiety Series

In this series, you will learn about the different causes of anxiety, and dig deeper to understand what triggers anxiety for you and ways to manage your symptoms. We’ll discuss what happens to your brain when it responds to a perceived threat, and what physical symptoms you may have. We’ll help you explore your thoughts, and compare your fears with the facts of a situation. You’ll also learn techniques to relax, reduce your response to triggers, and think and act assertively. Managing Depression Series

Depression is common, real, and treatable. However, it can be hard to recognize. This series will help you explore the causes and effects of depression on your thoughts, feelings, and behavior. You’ll learn how to challenge negative thinking that contributes to depression and ways to reduce stress. You’ll also get support for speaking up for yourself and for returning to the activities you enjoy. The skills learned in this series can help you manage your moods long after the class is over. Ending Overeating: A Social Support Series

If you have participated in any weight management program and would like social support to maintain your commitments, please join us in this
behavioral health education social support series. You will be able to reinforce your commitment with your peers, practice stress reduction techniques and mindful eating exercises, review your weight management tools, share information, learn about community resources, and support one another through positive, solutionoriented discussions. Note: This class is not appropriate if you have an eating disorder, like anorexia or bulimia. Textbook: 'The End of Overeating' by David Kessler available for purchase. Open to Kaiser Permanente members only.
Sessions: Eight 1.5-hour sessions; continuing throughout the year, except on holidays. You can enroll in as many sessions as you choose.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

This class guides you through the practice of mindfulness meditation. Learn tools for coping with psychological and physical symptoms brought on by stress and stress-related illness. You will learn meditation, relaxation, movement, and gentle stretching. To participate in this class, we ask you to commit to daily practice and also to attend a Saturday retreat. This class is recommended for people seeking to develop relaxation practice in mindful meditation. You're welcome to attend the orientation offered prior to the series start date. The orientation is required if you want to attend the series, but the class fee can be paid for separately. Open to the community.
Sessions: One 2.5 hour orientation, Eight 2.5-hour sessions plus one Saturday retreat
Fee: Orientation: $25: $15 will be applied to the total cost of series. Series: Members $185; nonmembers $285. Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn and several CDs are included.

Insomnia Overview

This single-session class provides an overview of insomnia and various symptoms of sleep disorders. We’ll help you make an inventory your current sleep habits, review the basics of good sleep hygiene, and determine if you need additional help. Please join us if you are having trouble getting a good night’s rest. This class is a prerequisite for the Improving Your Sleep Series. If you register for the overview and the series at the same time, the fee for the overview will be subtracted from the series fee. Open to the community.

Improving Your Sleep Series

It’s no secret that we feel better when we sleep well. Current research indicates that a good solid sleep pattern is more important to our health than we have fully appreciated and known. This six-session series is designed to improve both the quantity and the quality of your sleep. Learn how sleeping behavior and thinking patterns affect your sleep and how to change both for a good night’s rest. This class does not address medical conditions that interfere with sleep or the use of sleep medications. Insomnia Overview is a prerequisite for this class. Open to the community.

Mindfulness and Women's Health

Through the practice of mindfullness, shared reading of texts, and discussion, you will learn to reinforce your need to be your own health advocate. Not a subsitute for therapy. Open to the community.

Peripartum Emotional Health and Wellness

In this ongoing weekly series, you will learn about depression and anxiety during and following pregnancy. With other women and a qualified group leader, identify and change your thinking patterns to improve your mood, your behavior, and your health. Learn coping skills, positive self-talk, and relaxation methods, and share with others who are feeling the same way. Note: Bring your newborn, but no child care is available for additional children. Open to members only.

Understanding Mental Health: An Overview for Families and Caregivers
This single-session class provides a brief overview of mental illness, mental health, and the resources available in the community to support concerned caregivers. This is an opportunity for families and caregivers to ask questions and get support. Guest speakers from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will make presentations in our mutual effort to link families to this educational resource. Open to the community.
