Pregnancy to Newborn: Healthy Beginnings

Breastfeeding

Your baby’s health begins with good nutrition, and studies show that breastfeeding offers many health benefits for you and your infant. In this class, you’ll learn why it is important to breastfeed. We’ll also show you how to hold your baby for nursing and suggest ways you can prevent common breastfeeding discomforts and challenges. Taught by a certified lactation educator. Partners welcome. Healthy Beginnings: Early Pregnancy

Give your baby a healthy start. In this class, we’ll help you prepare for the physical and emotional changes you can expect in the coming months. We’ll explain about our prenatal care program and give you information about other classes and resources available to you during your pregnancy. We’ll also cover the substances and foods that may be harmful, common discomforts and remedies, prenatal screening tests, and fetal development. No children please. Partners welcome. Introduction to Pediatrics/New baby care

Attend this class between weeks 34 and 36 of your pregnancy to learn about pediatric issues and newborn care and to prepare to care for your newborn at home throughout infancy. Open to Kaiser Permanente members only.

Labor and Deliver Tour

If you’re a couple planning to deliver at San Jose Medical Center, join us for an informative program and tour of Labor and Delivery. The tour is conducted by the Santa Teresa Community Hospital Volunteer Department. Open to Kaiser Permanente members only.

Introduction to Peripartum Emotional Health

Stress, anxiety, and depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period can affect 10 to 15 percent of women. Symptoms may include bad moods, fatigue, low self-esteem, guilt, changes in sleeping and eating, and feelings of being overwhelmed and isolated. This single-session class can help you start feeling better and  provide resources for stress reduction. A review of the New Moms and Peripartum Emotional Health Series will be included. Note: You may bring your infant, but no childcare is available for additional children. Open to Kaiser Permanente members only.
Sessions: One 1.5-hour session, offered monthly, open to new moms/dads and infants welcome too.

Peripartum Emotional Health Support Series

In this ongoing weekly series, you’ll learn about depression and anxiety in the postpartum period. You can identify and change your thinking patterns in order to improve your mood and your behavior. You’ll learn coping skills, positive self-talk, and relaxation methods, and you’ll have time to share with others who are feeling the same way. Note: You may bring your infant, but no childcare is available for additional children. Open to Kaiser Permanente members only.

Prenatal Diagnosis

This class is for women 35 and over who have been referred to the Genetics Department to consider prenatal diagnosis and screening options. Join us to learn about amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling, including the risks of these procedures and the birth defects they detect. Taught by genetic counselors in a group setting. Open to Kaiser Permanente members only.

Prenatal Nutrition

This class covers the importance of diet in a healthy pregnancy, developing a nutritious prenatal eating plan, assessing your current diet and making modifications, and how diet can help with discomforts of pregnancy. The class also stresses the value of continuing to eat healthy to support breastfeeding and reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases associated with nutrition. The class is open to prenatal patients at any time during pregnancy. Taught by a registered dietitian. No children please. Partners welcome. Open to Kaiser Permanente members only. Available in Spanish.

Preparing for Childbirth

In this four-session program, we’ll teach you breathing and relaxation techniques to use during labor and delivery. We’ll discuss pain management options, the role of your coach, hospital procedures, and what to expect before, during, and after delivery. We encourage you to take this class during the last three months of pregnancy. Early registration is suggested. A hospital tour is given in this class. The class also includes car seat safety information presented by a Highway Patrol officer. Open to Kaiser Permanente members only.
Sessions: Four 3-hour sessions, Tuesday or Thursday evenings
Fee: $80/couple

In this single-session class, we’ll teach you breathing and relaxation techniques to use during labor and delivery.
