Spermicide

Spermicide comes in many different forms. It can be a gel, foam, cream, film, or tablet. All of the kinds have a chemical that kills sperm. You put it into your vagina before sex, or you can use it with another method of birth control like a condom or a diaphragm.

Risk of pregnancy

This is a moderately effective method of birth control. If you use it by itself, the risk of pregnancy with spermicide is about 29 percent.

Spermicide is much more effective if you use it with another method of birth control like a condom or a diaphragm than if you use it by itself.

Advantages
  • You can get it at almost any drug store or pharmacy without a prescription.
Disadvantages
  • It can cause skin irritation that can make you more likely to get a sexually transmitted disease (STD), like chlamydia or HIV.
  • It has a failure rate of 29 percent.
How to use spermicide
  • Fill the applicator that is supplied with the spermicidal cream or gel. Insert it into the vagina.
  • Use another method as well as the spermicide (like condoms or the diaphragm) to increase effectiveness.
