Asthma

Asthma is a lung disease that affects your breathing. The airways that carry air in and out of your lungs become inflamed and constricted. Wheezing, cough, chest tightness and difficulty breathing are common symptoms.

Keeping your Asthma Diary

When you keep an asthma diary, you pay close attention to your symptoms and to how you are feeling. By keeping a record of your symptoms, you can figure out:

  • What triggers your asthma
  • Whether the medicines are working
  • When flare-ups start

You may be able to tell that a flare-up is occurring when:

  • Asthma symptoms occur more often than usual, or you have more symptoms than usual.
  • You need more puffs than usual of quick-relief medicine, or you are taking the medicine more often than 2 days a week (other than for physical activity).
  • Asthma causes you to wake up at night more than twice a month.

Another way to see if your asthma is in good control is to take the Asthma Control Test (ACT). It asks about your asthma symptoms over the past 4 weeks.

If your score on the ACT is 19 or less, your asthma may not be in good control and you should let us know right away so that we can help you to better manage your symptoms.
