Drs. Kass and Crowley Develop Innovative Solution for Dermatology Patients

Elizabeth Kass, MD, and Ellen Crowley, MD, PhD

Eileen Crowley, MD, PhD, a dermatologist at the Napa Solano Medical Center, and Elizabeth Kass, MD, a dermatologist at the Central Valley Medical Center, realized that about 70 percent of our patients got their skin care issues addressed during a visit with their personal physicians. The physician, a general practitioner in adult medicine, would then have to schedule another appointment with a dermatologist. This seemed inconvenient for the patient and inefficient for the physician. Drs. Kass and Crowley thought it would be helpful to appoint a dermatologist to be on call every day by telephone and computer to relay images so that personal physicians could have access to an immediate consultation. This telemedicine approach brought immediate improvement. Thanks to rapid access, physicians can make complex diagnoses faster. This enhances service and convenience and, most important, greatly hastens patients’ recovery from skin conditions.
