Stephen Parodi, MD: A Leader in Preventing Infectious Disease

Powerful antibiotics called antimicrobials are important tools for curing serious infections, but overuse of these medications is a serious problem. Bacteria can become resistant, leaving fewer options for effective treatment. Dr. Stephen Parodi, the Chair of the Chiefs of Infectious Disease, developed an antimicrobial stewardship program at the Vallejo Medical Center that reduced the use of antibiotics and demonstrated a reduction in the number of infections related to these medications acquired in a healthcare setting. In April 2009, while planning the rollout of antimicrobial stewardship programs throughout our Northern California region, Dr. Parodi got a call about a new strain of influenza. Within days, he was serving as primary clinical leader for our response to the H1N1 influenza pandemic. He provided advice on vaccine distribution, treatment guidelines, and infection control; interacted with state and national government agencies; and briefed the media. Now that the pandemic has abated, the legacy of his leadership leaves us much better prepared to respond to the next infectious disease outbreak.
