Dr. Nancy Goler Proves Effectiveness of Substance Abuse Treatment for Pregnant Women

Jan 16, 2009

Nancy Goler, MD

The Kaiser Permanente Northern California Early Start Program is designed to reduce negative maternal and neonatal outcomes associated with substance use by making education and early intervention accessible to pregnant women. The key is the integration of substance abuse services with routine prenatal care by adding a licensed counselor to the care team. In 2009, Dr. Nancy Goler published the results of a 4-year study that involved nearly 50,000 pregnant women. The research project found that women who received Early Start counseling during pregnancy did significantly better than untreated substance abusers and compared favorably to pregnant women with no evidence of substance abuse. Dr. Goler is regional director of Early Start, and she practices in Napa/Solano. Dr. Goler’s findings support the Early Start model of care and established the program as the gold standard for replication.
