Dr. Daniel Klein helped transform HIV/AIDS from fatal to manageable

Sep 26, 2011

Daniel Klein, MD, Chief of Infectious Diseases and HIV Services at the Hayward Medical Center, received a Morris F. Collen Teaching Award in 2011. Dr. Klein was recognized for the indispensable role he played in the transformation of HIV/AIDS from a mostly fatal disease to a chronic, manageable condition. Dr. Klein’s efforts contribute to KP’s stellar record in caring for HIV/AIDS patients. Early on, he championed the multidisciplinary model of HIV care now in use throughout the region. He authored or coauthored numerous studies on HIV and AIDS and continues to conduct research on new therapeutic agents. Many of his studies significantly influenced HIV/AIDS clinical practice both at Kaiser Permanente and in the larger medical community. In 2010, the Infectious Diseases Society of America named him one of 95 distinguished physicians and scientists in the world, an honor reserved for those who have achieved professional excellence and provided significant service to the profession.
