Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Common Questions about Neurology

What is a neurologist?

Neurologists are doctors that diagnose and treat problems of the brain, spinal cord, nerves muscle.

What kind of problems does a neurologist see?

We often see patients with strokes, seizures, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, migraines and a wide variety of other neurological conditions.

How do I see a neurologist?

If your personal physician feels you have a neurologic condition, you might be referred to a neurologist. Your neurologist will perform tests, give advice, and sometimes prescribe medication. Often we function as a consultant to your primary care physician. However, for some chronic neurologic disorders we will continue to follow and treat you along with your primary care physician.

What is the difference between a neurologist and a neurosurgeon?

A “brain surgeon” (also called a neurosurgeon) performs surgery to treat certain neurologic problems. Neurologists do not perform surgery.

Where do I go to have my disability, sick leave, family forms and DMV forms filled out?

The Medical Correspondence Department can help you with those forms.  They will contact us if they need any signatures.  It is important to bring any letters that we have given you such as visit verification and time off letters with you to Medical Correspondence.  They are located at the lobby of 2238 Geary Blvd and their hours are 8:30am to 5:00pm.  Their phone number is (415)-833-3778.
