I received my medical degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and completed my internship and ophthalmology residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. Thereafter I was assigned to the Army Regional Medical Center in Frankfurt Germany followed by a tour of duty at the United States Military Academy at Point West. I completed my fellowship in oculofacial plastic, reconstructive and orbit surgery at Harvard's Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston in 1986. I then returned to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio where I earned two Meritorious Service Medals and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After serving 3 years as Assistant Chief of Ophthalmology at Brooke, I joined Kaiser Permanente as its first full time oculofacial plastic surgeon. I also joined the clinical faculty at the U.C. Davis Medical School in 1991 and was promoted to full Professor in 2003. I am happy to be in Sacramento with its great weather, kind people and easy access to Tahoe skiing, the Napa Valley, Yosemite and San Francisco. Someone said, "Go west young man" and I have not regretted doing so for one day.
As an oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, I specialize in procedures that deal with the management of deformities and abnormalities of the eyelids, the lacrimal (tear) system, the orbit (the bony cavity surrounding the eye), and adjacent face (eyebrows, forehead, and midrace). Abnormalities of the eyelids and adjacent structures can result from a variety of causes including birth defects, aging, tumors, injury, infection, or medical diseases such as thyroid disorders. Repair of such abnormalities may be considered to be medically necessary or cosmetic. As a general rule your Kaiser insurance will cover all or part of the costs of medically necessary surgery but not for cosmetic surgery.
