I am often asked why I chose a career in Dermatology. Many people consider Dermatology a field that deals with trivial, superficial matters. After many years of treating patients with a wide variety of skin diseases, I’ve realized the skin is merely an outward expression of the whole person. We can diagnose diseases of every internal organ as they manifest in the skin. Stress, anxiety, and depression, all cast shadows on the skin. Taking into account the enormous impact of skin cancer on our aging population, Dermatology becomes relevant to everyone. Most importantly, I simply enjoy being a physician caring for patients. It truly is a pleasure and a privilege to be given the opportunity to interact with such a wide variety of people on a daily basis. I can think of no other profession which affords an environment for daily personal growth, and the chance to improve the quality of lives of others.
