Thank you for visiting my home page! As an Emergency Medicine physician who works clinically in the Emergency Department, I don't really have any regular patients. So thank you for stopping by.

I chose emergency medicine for many reasons – the excitement of not knowing what may come through the Emergency Department doors next, the challenge of establishing effective communication and gaining trust with people in a short period of time, the opportunity to help people in crisis, and many more.
After 18 years of practicing emergency medicine, I still enjoy all of those things, but I have also found that one of my greatest satisfactions now comes from teaching and motivating patients to take better care of themselves. I believe that how illness affects us depends very much on our own attitude towards that illness. The more we learn about our own illness, the more we as patients participate in our own care, then the more we will live a healthy and effective life with whatever illness we have, and the less the illness itself will “win” over us.
I have also developed a professional interest in disaster response and humanitarian medical relief. I have responded to over 20 disasters both in the U.S. and overseas. In addition to my responsibilities in the E.D., this has provided me tremendous career and personal satisfaction.
In addition to my clinical practice in the Emergency Department, I have a number of administrative roles for Kaiser Permanente, and one role outside. For Kaiser Permanente, I coordinate physician volunteerism and community service, and as part of this, I am director of our new Global Health Program. In addition, I also serve as the medical director for Sacramento County EMS.

I have the fortune of working with the best nurses and staff both in our Emergency Departments and in my administrative roles.
I also have the fortune of being a member of the best group of E.D. physicians in any hospital which I know.
