Professional

Background

I was born in Seville, Spain while my father was stationed at Morón US Air Force Base. We moved to California when I was 1 year old and I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area.  I attended San Mateo High School, and then went to college at the University of California (UC) at Berkeley and majored in Linguistics.  I attended the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and then did my Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at UC San Diego.  I completed my Fellowship in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at UCSF.

In 1993, I joined The Permanente Medical Group at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco.   I am an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the UCSF Medical Center and am a volunteer attending physician at the San Francisco General Hospital Endocrinology Clinic.

Often I think about how lucky I am to be a doctor.  I had wanted to be many things when I was younger (astronaut, football player, and architect) and when in college I even thought about being a linguistics professor or working for the Central Intelligence Agency as a cryptographer.  Eventually I realized that even though I liked science, math, and problem solving, what I really liked was how science, math, and problem solving could affect people's lives.  Eventually I decided to specialize in the practice of Endocrinology, which is a perfect fit for me. Endocrinology is the study of metabolism, glands, and hormones, and my patients are like puzzles.  My patients and I work together to see if there is too much or too little hormone, or if there is problem with a gland, and often we can find a solution which completes the puzzle and restores the patient's health.

My Staff

I work with several great medical assistants and you will get a chance to meet them if you have an appointment with me. They help keep the clinic working smoothly, manage my schedule, and assist me with thyroid biopsy procedures. Ronissa Delgado works with me on most days, and I also work with Remedios Ewing, Nancy Ramos, and Suzette Banez.
