Background

My practice involves both surgical and non-surgical treatments of foot and ankle problems. This may seem quite limited; however, the function of foot and ankle is quite complex. Treatment of the foot and ankle can be quite challenging to provide a satisfactory result. In addition to mechanical problems, many systemic illnesses have manifestations in the foot. My job is to try to help you in solving these problems. My patients range in age from infants with congenital deformities to the elderly who may no longer be ambulatory but have effects of diabetes or vascular disease. I have a special interest in pediatric deformities as well as reconstructive surgery.

Practice Philosophy
I am very committed to educating my patients about what the cause of their problem is. I believe that patients must have some understanding of their problem to carry out the necessary rehabilitation that treatment involves. We work together to meet your medical needs. Often foot surgery involves elective decisions on whether to proceed with surgery or not. My role is to help you understand your condition so you are better prepared to make the best decision for yourself. In so doing, I often spend additional time with patients and frequently run behind. I request your understanding in these circumstances and will provide you the same courtesies.

I have worked at Kaiser since 1980. After a brief stint in private practice, I chose this form of health care as I felt the quality and comprehension was far greater than in the private setting. Patient care has always been the number one priority in this organization. The collegial interaction with my other physicians allows me to offer my patients excellent coordination and quality of care. Kaiser Oakland/Richmond are teaching hospitals. As a result, the staff are current with the latest therapeutics to enrich patient care. The podiatric surgery department is active in the San Francisco Bay Area Foot and Ankle Residency Program. I have been active in resident education for the last 24 years of my tenure. I have served as the Sub-Chief of podiatric surgery in Oakland since 1982. I have worked towards building a comprehensive department dedicated to treating patients as if they were family.

Personal
I was born and raised in San Francisco. I graduated from San Francisco State University with a BS in Cell and Molecular Biology. After completing my education, I moved to the East Bay to escape the fog. I enjoy running, skiing, mountain biking and gardening. My passion is my family, learning from my children as they grow up. My daughter is a graduate of UC Davis. My son, an avid surfer, is attending UC Santa Cruz. My wife keeps me grounded.
