Background

My earliest childhood aspiration was always to become a teacher. However, while majoring in electrical engineering at UCB in the early 1970’s, my father was diagnosed with cancer, which eventually claimed his life a couple of years later. I would often accompany my father to his doctor’s appointments and radiation therapy sessions, and I can recall how frustrated I was in not being able to do anything more to help him. I remember daydreaming about pursuing a medical research career and working on cancer cures.

While I was in medical school, I came to realize that teaching and helping others in a one-on-one manner was more of my passion than research. Perhaps it was the idealism of a popular television show, “Marcus Welby, M.D.,” that influenced me to choose a primary care specialty such as Family Practice. Dr. Welby always seemed to have compassion, empathy and patience, as well as hours to spend with each patient!  The ability to develop long term relationships with my patients and to get to know them on a personal level was why I chose to work in primary care.

I chose to work for Kaiser Permanente in 1980 shortly after completing my residency. I wanted to be able to focus on the practice of medicine without having to worry about the business aspect. Over the many years that I have been with Kaiser Permanente, I have come to appreciate and value my organization’s focus on patient education, preventative health, quality and customer service. My personal goal is to always do the best job possible and to put my patient’s health first.

Although my practice includes children and adults of all ages, I have a special interest in the care of young adults. I am a member of the Young Adult Clinic, which specializes in medical care and wellness services for adults ages 18-25.
My other clinical interests include doing minor surgical procedures, patient education, preventative health and Geriatrics.

I believe that you must take responsibility and an active role in your own health care. You should know what medications you are taking and why. You should exercise regularly, eat a sensible balanced diet, not smoke, drink only in moderation and be updated in your immunizations and preventative screens. For my elderly patients I put more emphasis on quality of life over quantity of life.

My Staff

I work very closely with a small group of medical assistants who help me to book or reschedule appointments, take messages and relay my medical action plans to patients.  They are also invaluable in assisting with medical procedures or in performing certain tests like blood glucose monitoring, nebulizer treatments or ear washes.
