I have spent my entire career as a Kaiser Permanente physician, because our system allows me to focus on what I most enjoy, caring for my patients. The Kaiser Permanente Dermatology Department sees patients of all ages, from infants to over 100, with a range of interesting issues, and I'm very proud of our staff and the care that we provide.
Exciting new things are happening in our field, and I attend several national and international dermatology meetings a year to stay up to date on new information.
I'm not originally from the Bay Area and came to the University of California, San Francisco, for what I expected would be three years of Dermatology training. But we loved it here and stayed!
Began Practice: 1978
Joined Kaiser Permanente: 1978
In addition to my patient care responsibilities at Kaiser Permanente, I teach regularly at the University of California, San Francisco, where I am Full Clinical Professor of Dermatology. I really enjoy teaching and mentoring the dermatology residents.

The services provided by our dermatology department are a collaboration of skills and efforts offered by our team of medical assistants, estheticians and nurses.
MEDICAL ASSISTANTS: Our medical assistants have administrative as well as clinical responsibilities including answering telephones, greeting patients, scheduling appointments, preparing patients for examinations and assisting me with examinations or procedures. Our medical assistants also collect and prepare laboratory specimens, dispose of contaminated supplies and prepare instruments for sterilization. If authorized by me or another dermatology provider, medical assistants can prepare and administer certain medications.
ESTHETICIANS: Estheticians are trained in the cosmetic treatment of the skin and perform various procedures including microdermabrasion and chemical peels. In addition to this our estheticians offer consultations to discuss your skin care needs and can recommend products and/or procedures that may be beneficial to you.
NURSES: There are three cosmetic nurses in our department that assist us in providing non-invasive, non-surgical procedures for facial rejuvenation including lasers and IPL and adminisister injectibles including Botox and Dysport and dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptura and Radiesse. One of our cosmetic nurses also specializes in sclerotherapy, a procedure that can improve the appearance of unwanted leg veins.
We also have three medical nurses that assist us in providing extended care for common skin conditions such as acne and warts. Lastly, we have three nurses that help administer phototherapy treatments for psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and other skin conditions.
