Background

For those new to this site, I have written a little about me and how I practice psychiatry. I hope you will take the time to read what I’ve written. I am enthusiastic about using the Web as a way of communicating with you, providing you with links to informative sites and enhancing your experience at Kaiser Permanente. My goal in working with you is to collaborate with you in improving your quality of life.

I joined Kaiser Permanente in 1992, after working 10 years in private practice. I spent my first five years with Kaiser at the Pleasanton facility, where I was Chief of Psychiatry from 1992-1997. In 1998, I transferred to Kaiser Oakland, where I was Chief of Psychiatry from 2002-2007. My goal has always been to provide the best care to Kaiser members, in a department that does the same.

One of the wonderful advantages of working for Kaiser Permanente is that I have tremendous resources to offer my patients. I am not alone in working for you, but rather I am part of a large treatment team and a comprehensive continuum of care. I believe there is no better care in the country than what I can offer you at Kaiser Permanente.

For me, Psychiatry has combined many passionate interests of mine: a life of service devoted to the care of others; a deep curiosity about the workings of the human mind; and a love of science and its progress. As a fellow pilgrim in the human predicament, I have had my own trials and tribulations and know the importance of a listening ear in times of need. I also know how devastating it can be to feel misunderstood, overlooked, or discounted by someone in a position of expertise.

Therefore, when you come to the Department of Psychiatry, it is my hope that you will be received with our loving attentiveness and our faith that you will either acquire, or rediscover in yourself, everything you need to overcome your difficulty.
