Menopause and Changes in Sexual Interest

Every woman is unique, and so are her relationships, her stressors, and the ways she will experience the years before and after menopause. Continuing to enjoy a healthy sex life amid the many changes during menopause may be challenging, but menopause does not mean the end to your sex life. There are many reasons for a change in sexual interest:

  • Vaginal dryness, leading to uncomfortable or painful intercourse
  • Emotional changes, stress, or depression
  • Hot flashes, irritability, or sleeplessness
  • A partner's changing sexual function
  • A serious illness or injury
  • Lack of time with your partner
  • Fatigue
  • Boredom with your sex life
  • Side effects of medications for you or your partner
  • Lack of a partner
Suggestions

Both men and women may find themselves taking longer to become sexually aroused as they age. If you lose interest in sex at the time of menopause, talk to us. We will consider all possible causes. We will also suggest that you talk to your sexual partner too. Let him or her know that you both may need to spend extra time kissing and touching before you become fully aroused. If your intimacies have become routine, try new ways or a different place – be creative. You may want to try massage, erotic books and movies, sensual baths, manual stimulation, and oral sex.

If you have an emergency medical condition, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital. An emergency medical condition is any of the following: (1) a medical condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in serious jeopardy to your health or body functions or organs; (2) active labor when there isn't enough time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery, or if transfer poses a threat to your (or your unborn child's) health and safety, or (3) a mental disorder that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity such that either you are an immediate danger to yourself or others, or you are not immediately able to provide for, or use, food, shelter, or clothing, due to the mental disorder.
