Office Visit

Getting Here

  • Our office address, maps, and transportation instructions can be found in "Offices and Directions."
  • For your first office visit, please arrive at least 30 minutes early to allow time for parking, check-in, and completing paperwork.
  • Please bring your Kaiser Permanente medical card and a photo ID, such as your driver's license, with you.

During Your Visit

What we will discuss

During your first visit, we will ask you about what symptoms you have been experiencing and what brought you to seek treatment at our department. We will also ask you about other aspects of your life, for example, your mental health and medical history as well as how you are currently experiencing relationships, work, school, and other activities.

Your treatment plan

We will then develop a unique and individualized treatment plan in collaboration with you to help bring you greater well being and functioning in life.  We may also discuss individual services, including individual or group psychotherapy, behavioral health education classes, and medication management visits, as appropriate and indicated. We can also familiarize you with community resources and self-care strategies.
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We encourage you to voice any confusion or concern you may have about instructions, medical tests, medications, or treatments.  If you do not understand our answers, please ask for more information.

You will receive a Preventive Health Prompt.
  • Your Preventive Health Prompt lists all of the preventive tests, screenings, and immunizations you have had in the past as well as when you will be due for your next test or screening. This is also available online.
  • We will review your medical information, which is readily available through computers in our offices.
  • We can discuss the unique issues involved in protecting the confidentiality of your psychiatric and chemical dependency information, both internally and externally. We may also review with you those who can see your psychological information within the medical group and under what circumstances. Please plan to discuss this important information with us during your treatment session and ensure that all your questions about confidentiality are answered.
For those patients referred to a psychiatrist:

We can review any lab or radiology results during your visit. While we are together, we can order tests, radiological exams, or medicines that are involved in the treatment of your mental health conditions. You will not need a paper prescription (in most cases) or a lab order form. After we submit the order, you can go to the laboratory, pharmacy or radiology department and present your card.

After Your Visit

Additional services
  • Depending on the nature of your treatment plan, we may refer you to additional providers in our department or in other departments. We will assist you in booking those appointments or placing necessary referrals.
  • If there is a specific service you would like to receive, please plan to discuss this with us either during or after your visit.
Test results
  • For lab tests, we will use our electronic medical record system to send the requisition to the Kaiser Permanente laboratory of your choice. For imaging procedures, we will schedule an appointment with the Radiology department.
  • When the results are ready, we  will contact you with your results by letter, secure e-mail message, or phone. In addition, you can view most of your laboratory results online, along with any comments that we may have attached to explain them.
Follow-up questions/activities
  • During our visit, we  may discuss our  appointment booking procedures, including how to cancel, change or book an appointment with us.
  • For physician appointments, we will also discuss refill procedures.
  • We  will provide our direct telephone number to you should you have questions about your treatment visit or plan. We will also review the hours we  are available in the clinic to respond to your questions and instruct you how to receive urgent services when we are not available.
  • You can also contact us by secure e-mail for nonurgent questions. Your message comes directly to us  and we are usually able to respond to questions within 2 business days if we are not away from the office.
  • In addition, you can always call our main number to reach someone about your concerns or issues. During business hours, a clinician triage team or advice nurses are available to give advice, send us a message, or instruct you how to manage urgent or acute situations. If you call our main number outside of business hours or on the weekend, you will be connected to the mental health call center.
