I joined the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group after being in private practice earlier because I believe it is the best model to provide integrated, effective care to all patients.

I like being a physician because I have the opportunity as an orthopaedic surgeon, often, to make a significant improvement in my patients "quality of life."

I have a special clinical interest in total joint replacements.

What My Patients Say

Dr. Balakrishnan explained very clearly the surgical approach that he would use and the reasons why. He was on time and took time to answer all my questions. - MS

Dr. Balakrishnan appears to genuinely care about his patients. He carefully explains procedures, nicely entertains questions, and carefully responds to his patients. His knowledge of orthopedic surgery is impressive. - MEL

Dr. Balakrishnan is an excellent surgeon that knows just what to do. He scoped both of my knees years ago and I just had a total knee replacement 6/26/19. One of the best decisions I've ever made in my life with the best doctor in Maryland!! I ask him if he could make my leg straight and give me quality of life again, and he did just that. I had minimal pain with this surgery and I'm recovering really fast. I feel like I can do anything, like a kid again. I love this doctor as he put life back in me as I was deeply depressed for years. I thought I would never stop experiencing pain in my knees as I became knock kneed. I pray that God continues to bless him and his mighty hands!!! I want to say again, thank you Dr. Balakrishnan!!!!! - TL

Dr. Balakrishnan replaced my left knee on June 8, 2019. It has been 2 months and I am well on way to recovery. His kindness and concern helped me to make the decision to go ahead with the surgery. I am 80 years old and had many concerns but with the help of the home health aides and his competence I am off to a good start on my road to recovery. I have every confidence that I can reach my goal to be independent and healthy. - JP
