2011 Seeds of Hope

Jul 01, 2011

By Dr. Anita Lee

Sunday, June 12,2011, marked Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara’s second annual Seeds of Hope Cancer Survivors Day Conference and Celebration, which focused on the importance of nutrition to help fight and prevent cancer.

Physician-in-Chief Susan Smarr opened the conference with a moment of silence to honor and celebrate the lives of those that could not be there in person—those battling cancer at home or in the hospital as well as those that have passed away and no longer have to fight.

During the closing ceremony, Assistant Physician-in-Chief Mark DuLong shared the acronym "HOPE"—Health and Happiness, Optimism, Patience, and Enjoyment—as an inspiration and model for us to live by.

As a physician, I try to focus on the positive every day, especially in helping patients in their fight against cancer. Our Seeds of Hope event reminded me of the good work we’re doing and of the importance to focus on good health in every aspect of our lives. I hope that this time next year we will have made even more progress in preventing and treating cancer, and encourage you to experience HOPE every day.
