I was born and brought up in Hyderabad, a large city in the south central state of Andhra Pradesh, India. At a very young age, I developed an interest in science and wanted to become a scientist. After completing my medical degree (MD) at Gandhi Medical College, I immigrated to the United States for further studies. In order to pursue my research interests, I did a fellowship in Hypertension Research at Charles R. Drew University School of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles, supported by a National Institutes of Health (NIH) training grant. During this time, I attended college and completed a Masters in Public Health (MPH) degree in Epidemiology at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Public Health. To complete my medical training, I specialized in Emergency Medicine through internship and residency at Los Angeles County King/Drew Medical Center. I chose Emergency Medicine because it seemed to be the most challenging and most rewarding field in medicine. I am board certified in Emergency Medicine through the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

At the suggestion of my mentor, I joined Kaiser Permanente in 1992. My wife and I chose to settle in the San Francisco Bay Area, as it provided the best of everything. We found this area to be vibrant, with many cultural and educational facilities, which were essential for us to raise our three children. I have been working as an Emergency Physician at Kaiser Permanente South San Francisco ever since. Over the last 20+ years, I have served in various local and regional administrative roles, including Chief of the Emergency Department and Chairman of the Research Committee. I enjoy practicing Emergency Medicine here, as it provides me with a stable, satisfying, and challenging work environment with wonderful colleagues. It also allows me to pursue my other areas of interest, mainly clinical research. This desire to do bigger and better research to benefit our patient community and gain professional satisfaction has lead me to work with some very smart Emergency Physicians who are doing research at Kaiser Permanente. I co-founded a voluntary group called Clinical Research in Emergency Services and Treatment (CREST) Network, which encourages, enables, and executes research in Emergency Medicine ( My main area of interest is designing and developing technology tools that will improve the outcomes for our patients.  I also teach an annual course to help Emergency Physicians keep current with their medical knowledge and maintain their board certification status.

I also speak Telugu, Hindi and Urdu.
