As a Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialist, I focus on the non-operative treatment of sports injuries, overuse conditions, and the functional rehabilitation of chronic musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoarthritis. By optimizing my patient’s home exercise habits as well as providing a template for recovery, I hope to guide my patients through the recovery and maintenance process, and give them my perspective on available therapies, both traditional and complementary, so they can return to function as quickly as possible. I am a patient as well as a practitioner, and I hope my personal experience with injury and chronic disease will help my patients realize we are in this together, and together, we can fight the good fight together.
As we as a society live longer, these extra years require extra emphasis on preventive measures to sustain and strengthen our muscles, tendons, and bones. Through the combination of realistic daily strategies to combat the effects of aging (yoga, tai chi, strength and balance training, proper nutrition, and weight maintenance) with the available pharmacological, surgical, and alternative options, I hope to help my patients optimize their day-to-day movements, whether trying to ski a black diamond, or just trying to get up from the couch without pain. I also hope to age actively, if not gracefully, with my patients, fighting the good fight all along the way.
Additionally, I am a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) Medical School.
