Professional

Background

My fascination with the working of the human brain began in eighth grade and I knew in high school I would become a neurologist someday.

I studied Biochemistry at Harvard College before entering medical school at Stanford and fell in love with the Bay Area. I returned to Harvard to do my internship and neurology residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital at Massachusetts General Hospital. I got married in Boston and we came back to the Bay Area to settle down.

I completed a stroke fellowship and also obtained my Master's in Clinical Research at the University of California, San Francisco. I worked at UCSF for 8 years and served as the Director of Stroke Fellowship and the Director of UCSF Primary Stroke Center prior to joining Kaiser Permanente in 2011. I remain on UCSF faculty as an Assistant Professor of Neurology.

Being involved with the community is also important to me. Therefore, I am an active volunteer for the American Heart Association. I am a member of the AHA Stroke Council, a member of the AHA Health Equity Group, and vice-chair of the Ethnic and Minority Committee.

Aside from my work, I love to travel, to be outdoors and to spend time with my family.

Roles and Responsibilities

Clinically, I specialize in neurovascular disorders including stroke/TIA, large artery atherosclerotic disease, aneurysm, and vascular malformation. Besides being a stroke neurologist, I also serve as the co-Local Research Chair at Walnut Creek. In addition, I spend a significant part of my time doing clinical research at Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in areas of acute management of patients with TIA, diagnosis and management of intracranial arterial stenosis, and the effect of race-ethnicity on stroke risk factors and outcomes.

For me, being a physician and a researcher is the perfect combination. It allows me to play an active role in advancing the science of medicine as well as be a translator of medical research. I believe strongly in applying evidence-based medicine to my everyday patient care. I believe in the potential of science and technology to improve health, although we may not always have the answers. As your physician, I look forward to working together with you and your families to optimize your stroke care and prevention.
