I am an emergency physician. As such, I provide the first line of defense for people in distress who need to access our care facilities. A single day in the Emergency Department is never the same as another. People who seek our help present with all kinds of complaints from simple colds to devastating infections, yet some simply seek reassurance as they confront various stressors in their lives. This work is extremely challenging but emotionally rewarding. I feel humbled and at the same time highly gratified to be in this unique position where I can render assistance and make a real difference in people’s lives.
I’ve been with Kaiser Permanente since 2008. Having worked in several other hospitals, I‘ve become convinced that Kaiser Permanente offers the most efficient and patient-oriented model of health care.
Nowhere else have I seen such a smooth continuity of patient care. Here I can treat someone in the Emergency Department one day and arrange a close follow up with his own physician or specialist the following day. Nowhere else have I seen the medical care to be so well integrated where all of a patient’s medical history is so easily accessible through computerized medical health record. Direct e-mail communication between physicians and their patients has never been easier.
Another positive element of care at Kaiser is how much focus is placed on healthy living. There are a great number of classes and lectures available to patients with specific medical conditions and I routinely I enroll patients into these educational pathways where they can learn about managing their disease and staying healthy.
